What is a Certificate of Origin?
A Certificate of Origin (CO) is a document which states the origin of goods being exported. Virtually every country in the world considers the origin of imported goods when determining what duty will be assessed on the goods or, in some cases, whether the goods may be legally imported at all.
When freight forwarders are handling overseas shipments, there are some foreign countries or importers that require a Certificate of Origin for certain commodities. The purpose of the certificate is to authenticate the merchandise’s country of origin. Customs offices use this document to determine whether or not a preferential duty rate applies on the products being imported.

The form requires the authorized signature of the local Chamber of Commerce Secretary or their designee and the seal of that organization. The descriptions and amounts on the CO must be consistent with those entered on the invoice.
